There are several new game modes to be introduced in Rise of the Tomb Raider. They have been hinted at before, when the achievement list was unveiled and five of the achievements are focussed on a game mode called “Score Attack”.
Gilded (15)
“Complete a level in Score Attack with a gold score”
My Own Worst Enemy (15)
“Complete a level in Score Attack with a score multiplier of 2 or more”
That All You Got? (15)
“Complete 3 Replay Challenges in one Score Attack”
Way to Go (25)
“Complete every level in Score Attack with a bronze score or better”
Well Begun Is Half Done (25)
“Complete 10 levels in Score Attack with a gold score”
Besides the Score Attack, there will be Chapter Replay, Chapter Replay Elite and Remnant Resistance.
In Chapter Replay, you replay chapters of the story while completing challenges. In Chapter Replay Elite you will do so with your upgraded skills and gear.
“Replay earlier chapters of the story with your upgraded skills and equipment and complete challenges to earn credits.”
In Score Attack you will replay levels, e.g. “The Prophet’s Tomb”, with a new set of rules.
“Finish the level quickly for a time bonus. Chain together attacks, movements and collectibles to keep your multiplier high. Complete challenges and collect medals to earn credits!”
You can see above how the game keeps score and tracks the time for a time bonus. Special kinds of kills, like the “Environment Kill” seen above, add to the multiplier, as does maintaining “Kill Streaks”.
Possible challenges are “Deathless” (1000 credits), “Untouchable” (2000 credits), “Marksman” (500 credits), “Executioner” (500 credits) and “Lucky Penny” (1000 credits).
In Remnant Resistance you will replay the hubs with a new set of goals. You can also create your own missions with objectives and enemies and challenge your friends.
“Replay Hub spaces with a new set of goals. Craft your own missions by choosing the objectives, enemies and more. Once you've mastered the mission, challenge friends and the community to beat your high score or play other custom missions created by the community.”
In the example above, called “Targeted Strike”, you can see the objective being “Locate and take out the leader!”. To do so Lara has to fight her way to other enemies, one of them being the infamous Flamethrower baddy.
The above screenshot demonstrates how a “Remnant Resistance“ mission is created.
It seems you first pick a level, here “The Village”, then choose and objective, like ”Recover Relics”, “Rescue Hostages”, “Scavenge Supplies”, “Targeted Strike” or “Steal Info”)
You can then modify the experience with and outfit, here “Gray Hoodie: Brawler”, with weapons, here the “Recurve Bow”, the “Revolver” and the “Break-Action Shotgun” and with other cards (see below), here “Adrenalin” and “Lucky”.
Another item appearing in the achievements list that left us bewildered were “Cards”.
These Belong in A Museum (25)
“Collect 300 Cards”
Expedition Cards are one of the important features in these special game modes. By spending credits, which are earned by replaying missions and fulfilling challenges you can purchase cards. These come in two types:
Foil and Common. While common cards are used up and can only be used once, foil cards can be used as often as you like. These cards help to customize your experience.
